A New Chapter?

I have got to say that this year has been full of surprises and full days and nights, Alhumdulillah. Since January 1st 2011, I have been on vacation ( what you have to know is that vacations with my family mean going to every place you can in the area your in, no bathroom breaks (we went from LV, to LA, to SD, to SF, to Yosemite, back to SF) ) . After getting back from the west coast I was rushing around preparing for Spring 2011. I decided 5 classes weren't enough and went for 6, those of you who look at credits I had a whole 18 on my plate. After fighting, crying, and drying up every ounce of blood and sweat, I made it through, only for a weeks worth of a break where I caught up with work, errands, went to ICNA ( see post below ), and a little to no sleep. A week after the end of Spring 2011, I started two classes for Summer 1. A week after that it was up to three classes, two for  Summer 1 and one for Summer 2. Let me just remind you that summer courses are only a month long! I decided books were for losers, and I didn't have the funds, so I went in without, and wow, it was hard without books. I spent every waking moment on those classes. I would go to sleep with the laptop and wake up with it. Alhumdulillah I did fine. After the first two ended I moved onto my third and fourth.

You didn't see that coming huh? Yes I started a fourth class for Summer 3. ( ps I also went on vacation with my family again somewhere in between that time ) Fourth of July came and went, but I was still under tremendous amount of work. With all of that I also had to deal with a ton of other stuff. ( it was very serious, important, and stressful ) Near the end of July, Summer 2 ended, and a week after that Summer 3 went with it. That leaves the weekend of my birthday/ the start of Ramadan. I went to the Hot Air Balloon Festival, which was fun. My birthday was good, nothing special. I had an amazing time with my mom, and got the best birthday present ever! Alhumdulillah, I can't complain!

Now, Ramadan, Alhumdulillah, Alhumdulillah, Alhumdulillah it was amazing! I could not have asked for a better month. ( See Post Below ) I was determined to make every tarawih prayer, and Alhumdulillah I almost did. I feel fresh and clean. My soul feels like it has been swinging in a garden worry- free. I also spent every night of the last ten night staying up praying for Laylat ul Qadr. I know it sounds as if I have gone through this month and come out refreshed from my stressful year of study, but that is not true in this case. Yes I feel more alive, but I am thoroughly exhausted. I have bags under my eyes, I am breaking out from every inch on my face. I have went to two funerals in the past week and a half, and been stressed about many other things. Work has been tough since my boss relies on me too much, and now I just want a massage and some sleep. Again, no complains. But the end is not nearly here.

This week, well today I finish my last day of fasting and Celebrate Eid - ul - Fitr tomorrow, Inshallah, with the other half of the world who is not Celebrating today. After tomorrow, I start classes, attend my cousins mehndi ceremony, and her wedding the day after, and her reception the day after that. Hello, labor day weekend NOT! After the wedding I have to spend time with family, and then prepare for this NEW CHAPTER in my life. Tuesday, I start my new job, Alhumdulillah, and classes at a NEW school. I am completely freaking out and everything, like it has the rest of this year, is moving too fast. I need to get a grip on something.

Take a deep breathe.

Okay, I am fine. I am going to get through this like I have gone through everything, with a calm mind and Allah SWT on my side I can't go wrong. I have complete faith in myself, Allah SWT wouldn't have put me in this position or gotten me this far if I couldn't handle it on my own. Alhumdullilah, Mashallah, and Inshallah, please make du'a that pray that I succeed in all of my endeavors! I am ready to face this new chapter with open arms! (I'll keep you posted! )

Does anyone else smell the butterscotch?

PS Did I mention that I am still trying to graduate in August ( the month ends tom ), that is a whole other story!

-T

I also would like to give my condolences to those who were affected by Hurricane Irene this week. Many families and home are still flooded and without power and water. I hope all of you are safe. Please feel free to ask me if you need any help with anything! <3 Inshallah you will get through this!

Ramadan

It's all over. Caput. Gone. Finished. Good bye. Today may just be the last day of Ramadan. Today may be last Ramadan for you. Spending everyday at the masjid was a blessing. Coming closer to Islam and Allah SWT was the best thing about Ramadan. Alhumdulillah, Inshallah all of our hard work and du'a s will be granted. My last du'a is for us to see a month like this once again, maybe even a better one. I hope that all of your du'a are granted and I hope that you make the best of the time you have until the next Ramadan.

Alhumdulillah! Subhanallah! Mashallah! This Ramadan has been the best by far. I feel as if I have fallen in love. The love I feel for my religion and for Allah SWT is overpowering every decision I have made this month.

I went into this holy month thinking I was going to sleep, fast, and pray. Alhumdulillah I am so blessed to be living in this community where religion is so important. From the first fast I have attended almost every tarawih prayer, met new people, and fallen completely in love with my religion, more than I was before this. My friends are asking me if I am okay and why I haven't texted them or talked to them. Girls, I am sorry but my whole day is litterally spent at the Masjid, either teaching the kids at Summer Camp about Ramadan, or praying, or Tarawih. The weekends are spent at work and then rushing out to go for Jumm'a, or to go help prepare Iftar.

Now that it's the last ten days I have been at the masjid through out the night. Inshallah Allah SWT grants all of my du'a.

Mashallah, Br. Imran has such a beautiful voice, his recitation during Qayamu 'Layl and jumm'a is breathtaking. We have also learned so much from him alhumdulillah. He has sat down with the sisters many times during these last ten days to answer our questions and qualms. A few du'a s and things he has told us are listed below:

Allahuma irda anee (oh Allah be pleased me)

Allahuma rraddiyna (please us) warda Agnna (and be pleased with us)

Allahuma innaka afuwun karimun tuhibu al afwa fafu Anna ya Karim ( oh Allah you are the generous pardoner and you love pardoning so pardon us oh generous one)

For calamity, bad weather, or azhab:

Allahumma innee as'aluka khayraha wa khayri ma khuliqat leh, wa a3oothu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma khuliqat leh

Oh Allah! I ask you the best of it and the best it was created for, and I seek refuge in you from the worst of it and the worst it was created for.

Allahumma 7awaalayna laa 3alayna

Oh Allah around us and not upon us

Rabbana kshif 3annal 3athaaba inna mu'minoon

Oh Allah (SWT) relieve us of punishment indeed we are believers.

I hope that we can all benefit from each other when it comes to learning about Islam. Inshallah.

Here are a few more duas I pulled off of the UCONN MSA  website:

The Prophet (saw) said "Whomsoever stands in prayer on Laylatul Qadr with sincere faith and seeking reward from Allah, all of his past sins (minor) will be forgiven." As we enter the final 10 nights of Ramadan, let us be strive to attain Allah's mercy, forgiveness, and be freed from the hell fire.

Translation: O Allah make Iman beloved to us and beautify it in our hearts, and make us hate Disbelief, immorality, and Sinning and Make us amongst those who are rightly guided.

Ramadan Dua Day 11

 E-mail | Print | PDF
Dua for the day:

Dua: رَّبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا

Transliteration: rabbi irhamhuma kama rabbayanee sagheera
Translation: My Lord, have mercy upon them (parents) as they brought me up [when I was] small.

I'm ashamed to have put this Dua up so late. Our parents deserve our Dua over and over again. Without them where would we be today? Allah (swt) in many places in the Quran says "Worship Allah without any partners AND treat your parents nicely" and "Thank me and your parents".

How important are the parents that Allah (swt) pairs his rights along with your parents??

May Allah have mercy on our Parents.

Ramadan Dua Day 10

 E-mail | Print | PDF
Dua of the day:

رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنْفُسَنَا وَإِنْ لَمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ

Transliteration: rabbanaa Dhalamnaa anfusanaa wa illam taghfir lanaa wa-tarhamnaa lanakunanna min al-khaasiren

"Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers."

Surah Al-Araaf Verse 23

Ramadan Dua Day 9

 E-mail | Print | PDF
Dua for the Day:

رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ

Transliteration: rabbi innee lima anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqeer
Translation: "My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You would send down to me, in need."

This dua is taken from Surah Al-Qasas where Musa supplicates to Allah after he helps out the two women from Al-Madyan. We see that after helping the two women Musa asked Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) for a reward and not from them.

Hence, Rewards are only gained by doing them for the sole pleasure of Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala. Otherwise there is no reward. May Allah make our intentions pure and make us fast, pray, and any other worship in Ramadan with a true belief and seeking Reward from Allah only.

Dua is from Surah Al Qasas 28:24

Ramadan Dua Day 8

 E-mail | Print | PDF
Dua for the Day:

اللهم اعتق رقابنا من النار

Transliteration: Allahumma a'tiq riqabana min al naar
Translation: Oh Allah free our necks from the Fire

This dua should be recited every night/day/moment in Ramadan. This is because it is found in many hadith that Allah (swt) frees souls from the Hell Fire every night during Ramadan. In a specific hadith, it is noted Allah frees the souls at the time of iftaar. Classed Hasan by Suyooti and Albani.

Ramadan Dua Day 7

 E-mail | Print | PDF
Dua for the day:

اللهم إني أسألك لذة النظر إلى وجهك الكريم

Transliteration: Allahumma inni as'aluka laddhat an-nadhr ila wajhika al-kareem

Translation: Oh God, I ask you the joy of looking at your blessed face

The greatest blessing in the afterlife is not to enter Jannah. The greatest blessing is to be amongst those who are privileged to see Allah's blessed face. May Allah make us amongst those who see his blessed Face on that day.

The prophet (saws) said this dua in part of a bigger dua as narrated in many books of Hadith and it is authentic.

Check out this video that focuses on the sole topic of the day when the people in Jannah will see the Face of their Lord.

Ramadan Dua Day 6
Dua for the day:

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Transliteration: Rabbana aatina fiddunya hasanatin wa fil akhirati hasanatan wa qina adhaab an-naar

Translation: Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire."

Allah mentions this dua during the verses of Hajj, and he says those who look forward to the Hereafter ask with this dua. However, those who only seek benefit in this world don't ask for anything in the hereafter and ask only for the worldly good. So this Ramadan, lets be the ones who gain something in the hereafter, lets say being saved from the hell fire. Allah frees souls every night in Ramadan. Lets make sure that our names are called and saved this Ramadan.

Ramadan Dua Day 5
Dua for today:

اللهُم إنى أعوذ برضاك من سخطك، وبمعافاتك من عقوبتك، وأعوذ بك منك لا أًحصى ثناء عليك، أنت كما أثنيت على نفسك

Transliteration: Allahumma inni a'udhubi ridhaaka min sakhatik wa be mu'aafaatika min 'uqbatik, wa a'udhubika minka la uhsi thanaa an 'alayka anta kama athnayta 'ala nafsak

Ramadan Dua Day 3
In a hadith recorded by Imam Baihaqi and classed Saheeh by Shaikh Albaani, "Three prayers are not rejected: the prayer of a father, the prayer of a fasting person, and the prayer of a traveler." So today's dua is the dua when breaking your fast.

اللَّهُمَّ اِنِّى لَكَ صُمْتُ وَبِكَ امنْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ اَفْطَرْتُ

(Allaahumma Laka Sumtu wa bika aamantu Wa 'Ala Rizqika Aftartu.)

"Oh, Allaah! For Your sake I have fasted and with Your sustenance I have broken my fast."

The dua is taken from Abu Dawood Chapter Book of fasting.

Also, in another narration it is known that the dua is also accepted at the time of breaking the fast. So we should make dua at that time not only for ourselves but also mankind as a whole also.

For more info on times when Dua is accepted look here:

Ramadan Dua Day 2
The Supplication of Dhun Nun (Prophet Yunus) in the belly of the whale:

لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبۡحَـٰنَكَ إِنِّى ڪُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِين

Transliteration: Laa ilaaha illa anta, subhanaka inni kuntu min al-dhalimeen
Translation: There is no lord except you, I have been amongst the wrong doers.

This dua has many merits attached to it and is found in many hadith. The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said:

"The invocation of my brother Dha-n-Nun, "None has the right to be worshipped save You; glory be to You, far
removed are You from any imperfection; I have been amongst the wrong-doers," none who is experiencing difficulty employs it except that Allah would relieve him of his difficulty."

Shaikh al Islam Ibn Taymiyyah wrote a whole book on the explanation of this dua.
Book: http://www.kalamullah.com/Books/The%20Relief%20From%20Distress.pdf

The first Dua I am going to post, is among one of the first dua's to be found when you open the Quran. It was first said by Ibrahim (a.s) when he and his son finished building the Kaa'bah. He said:

رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ السَّمِيعُ العَلِيمُ

Transliteration: Rabbanā Taqabbal Minnā ‘Innaka ‘Anta As-Samī`u Al-`Alīm
Translation: Our Lord! Accept this from us: You are the All-Hearing, the All-knowing

We can put this in practice on a daily basis after any deed we have done for Allah (swt). This reaffirms us that we did it for his sake and also shows that no matter how many good deeds we do, if Allah doesn't accept them then they are useless.

So I ask Allah to accept this from us!

Many dua's that have been mentioned here you can find something common amongst them. You can see that there is a need by the one who is asking, and there is an admittance that "Yes, I am wrong" or "I shouldn't have done that". Hence, there is no playing games with Allah. He knows what you have done. A true repentance requires acceptance on the sinners part to know he has wronged himself.

This also a list of some duas that you can recite everyday!

Last but not least and a little late, a Ramadan checklist for next year!

Ramadan Checklist

PDF
A Checklist for Ramadan

1. Ask Allah to enable you to reach Ramadan and to get the most out of it as the Salaf (early generation of pious people) used to do.

2. Intend to fast every day with Iman and pure intention seeking the reward from Allah alone. The Prophet peace be upon him said, "Whoever fasts in Ramadan with Iman and seeking reward (from Allah) his past sins will be forgiven". (Bukhari)

3. Read the whole Qur'an at least once as the Prophet peace be upon him did.

4. Have Suhoor as the Prophet peace be upon him said, "Have Suhoor because it is blessed".

5. Make Du'a during the fast because the Prophet peace be upon him said that three people's supplication is not rejected one of them is the fasting person. Ask for the good of this life and the next for yourself, your family and Muslims in general.

6. Make Dua before opening the fast. The Prophet peace be upon him said, "The fasting person has a supplication that is answered when he opens his fast".

7. Give Sadaqah and be good to people. The Prophet peace be upon him was the most generous of people and he was most generous in Ramadan.

8. Avoid anything that diminishes the fast such as, lying, backbiting, cheating, getting angry. The Prophet peace be upon him said "Whoever does not give up false statements (i.e. telling lies), and evil deeds, and speaking bad words to others, Allah is not in need of his (fasting) leaving his food and drink." [Bukhari]

9. Do not eat too much after Iftar.

10. Ask for forgiveness since this is the month Allah frees people from the fire.

11. Pray At-Tarawih with Khushoo. If you pray in the Masjid complete the Salah with the Imam. If you pray at home prolong the Salah as long as you can. The Prophet peace be upon him said, "Whoever prays during Ramadan with Iman and seeking reward (from Allah) his past sins will be forgiven".

12. Feed the poor and invite others for Iftar. The Prophet peace be upon him said, "Whoever gives Iftar to someone fasting he will have the same reward without decreasing the reward of the person fasting".

13. Try harder the last ten nights especially the odd nights. The prophet would strive in Ramadan more than he would in any other month and more so in the last ten days.

14. Say this Dua in the nights that Laitul-Qadr is likely to fall on: Allhumma innaka afuwun tuhibbul-afwa fa'fu anni (O Allah you are Forgiving and love forgiveness so forgive me).

15. Ask Allah to accept all your good actions during this month.

"Oh you who believe, what is the matter with you that when you are asked to march forward in the cause of Allah you cling heavily to the earth. Are you pleased with the life of this world rather than the Hereafter but little is the enjoyment of the life of this world as compared with the Hereafter."
-Al Quran 9.3

Another checklist

1. Make a resolve to win the maximum favour of Allah: perform extra voluntary prayers (Nawaafil), make frequent Du'a and increase remembrance (Dhikr).

2. Try to recite some Qu'ran after every Prayer. In fact if you read 3-4 pages after every Prayer you can easily finish the entire Quran in Ramadan! Study the Quranic Tafseer (commentary) every morning.

3. Invite a person you are not very close with to your home for Iftar, at least once a week. You will notice the blessings in your relationships!

4. Bring life to your family! Everyday, try to conclude the fast with your family and spend some quality time together to understand each other better.

I hope this finds you well!

Laylat - ul - Qadr

We have now embarked on the last ten nights of Ramadan. The Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam used to exert himself in devotion during the last ten nights to a greater extent than at any other time.

Laylat al Qadr (the Night of Power) is described in the Qur’an as, {better than a thousand months}. [Surah Al-Qadr: 3] The Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said: "Whoever prays during the night of Qadr with faith and hoping for its reward will have all of his previous sins forgiven." [Sahih al-Bukhaari and Sahih Muslim on the authority of Abu Hurairah].

May Allah forgive our sins and free us from the penalty of the fire, Ameen.

Qadr means honor and dignity. Laylat al Qadr means the night of honor and dignity. It is this night in which the first Divine Revelation came to the Prophet sallalahu alayhi wasallam, when he was in prayer in the cave of Hira. Since this night enjoys the honor of having the first revelation brought to the Prophet sallalahu alayhi wasallam, it has been named Laylat al Qadr.

This is one of the holiest and most blessed nights, which is likely to occur on one of the odd nights on the last ten days of Ramadan and most likely to be the 27th. The reward of worship on this night is better than the worship of a thousand months of worship, equivalent to a person's lifetime. So, on this night one should pray Nafil Salaat, recite the Qur’an, do Tasbih, Zikr, Du’a, etc as much as possible.
This night had already opened its gates of treasures when the angel for the first time had come with the Divine Message in the cave of Hira, but its auspiciousness has continued to be with us permanently. Every year in the month of Ramadan, this night is given to the Ummah. Muslims engage in prayers, recitation of Qur’an and praying to Allah[swt], as the Prophet sallalahu alayhi wasallam said: "The person who offered prayers to Allah in the night of Dignity with faith and with hope of reward from Allah[swt], all his past sins have been forgiven." (Sahih al-Bukhaari)

As the rainy season is suitable for farming, similarly for the attainment of nearness to Allah, specific times, specific days and specific nights are most suitable, e.g. the time of Tahajjud prayers, Friday prayers, month of Ramadan, the Day of Arafat, etc. So also the Night of Power is the most suitable night for attaining nearness to Allah[swt].

In the Hadith, we have been asked to seek The Night in the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan. Hazrat Aa'ishah radhiyallahu anhaa narrates that the Messenger of Allah[swt] sallalahu alayhi wasallam has said, 'Seek the night of Dignity in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan'.(Sahih al-Bukhaari).

By odd nights, the reference is made to the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, 29th night of the month of Ramadan. No one night has been fixed so that the yearning to find it may increase and people may spend more nights in worshipping Allah[swt]. From this aspect, the importance of `Itikaaf (seclusion) during the last ten days of Ramadan, is clear.

Some special prayers and Zikr for Lailat-ul-Qadr:

1. Seeking Forgiveness. Hazrat Aa'ishah radhiyallahu anhaa asked the Prophet sallalahu alayhi wasallam that if she happened to get the night sublime what prayer should she say. The Prophet sallalahu alayhi wasallam replied that she should say the following prayer :
"Allahumma innaka afuwwun kareemun tuhib-bul af-wa fa-afo anni"
(O Allah, You are the One who grants pardon for sins, loves forgiving, so forgive me.)

2. Reciting Astaghfar. The following should be recited as much as possible:
"Astaghfirullah hallazi la-ila-ha illa huwal Hayyul Qayyumo wa atu-bu ilaihe"
(I seek forgiveness from Allah, the Almighty; there is no God but He. He is self-Existent, the Eternal and I return to Him)

3. Reciting Surah `Lailat-ul-Qadr...'
"Inna anzalnahu fee lailatul Qadr, Wa maa adraka maa lailatul Qadr.
Lailatul Qadri khairum min alfi shahr. Tanazzalul malai-katu var-roohu
fee ha bi izni Rabbihim min kulle amr. Salaamun heya hatta matla-il fajr."

4. Do Salaat-ul-Tasbih.
Source: Fiqh-us-Sunnah, vol 2, # 33
‘Ikrimah reports from Ibn ‘Abbas that the Messenger[saw] of Allah said to ‘Abbas ibn ‘Abdal-Mutalib: “O ‘Abbas, O Uncle, shall I not give you, shall I not present to you, shall I not donate to you, shall I not tell you ten things which, if you do, Allah will forgive your first and last sins, past and present sins, intentional and unintentional sins, private and public sins? The ten actions are: pray four rak’at, reciting in every rak’ah al-Fatihah and a surah. And when you finish the Qur’anic recitation of the first rak’ah, say, while standing, ‘Subhanallah, al-hamdulillah, wa la ilaha illallah, wa Allahu Akbar‘ ['Glory be to Allah. All praise is due to Allah. There is no God except Allah. Allah is the greatest.'] fifteen times. Then make ruku’, and while you are in ruku’, say the same ten times; then stand, and say the same ten times. Then go down and make sajdah, and while you’re in sajdah, say the same ten times. Then sit after the sajdah, and say the same ten times. Then make sajdah, and say the same ten times. Then sit after the second sajdah, and say the same another ten times. That is seventy-five [repetitions of the phrases] in each rak’ah. Do that in each of the four rak’at. If you can pray it once a day, do so. If you cannot, then once every Friday. If you cannot do that, then once a year. And if you cannot do that then once in your life.“

This Hadith is related by Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, Ibn Khuzaimah in his Sahih, and at-Tabarani. About this Hadith al-Mundhiri says: “This Hadith has been related through many chains and from a number of companions. The best of them is this one from ‘Ikrimah. A group of scholars have graded it to be Sahih, including al-Hafez Abu Bakr al-’Ajari, (al-Mundhiri’s teachers), Abu Muhammad ‘Abdurrahim al-Misri, and Abu al-Hassan al-Maqdisi.” Ibn alMubarak says: “The Tasbih prayer is a greatly desired act and it is desirable that one should punctually observe it and never neglect it.

Suggestions:
1. You can pray it any part of the day and night except of course during the forbidden times for performing Salaat. It is encouraged during the potential nights of Laylat al Qadr because of the amazing blessings during that blessed night as stated in the Qur’an itself (Surah Qadr, Chapter 97).

2. Your aim is to recite the above Tasbih 300 times in Four Rakah as stated in the Hadith narrated above, however, please do not count loudly or fingers or by holding beads in your hand.

3. You may count by pressing the fingers as a reminder. For example if you are in Ruku. You may press the first finger of your right hand first for the first count, then the finger next to it for second count, then, the middle finger for third count, following this method until you reach the little finger of your left hand, and that will give you a count of ten. Use the same method during the whole Salaat.

5. Do Afzul Zikr i.e. La ilaha illallah..

Allah Hummagh-firli maa antaa aalamo behi minni fa'ain udtu faa udli bil mughfiraatay...Allah Hummaghfirli maa wa'aito min nafsi walam taajid lahu wafa'a indi...Allah hummaghfirli rama zatil al haade wasahawatil jinaanay wahafawatay lilsaanay. ameen

O Allah forgive my sins of which You are aware and if I repeat it then forgive me again. O Allah! I couldn't get an opportunity to fulfill the covenants done against my evil deeds, forgive these sins too. O Allah forgive the sins done by the action of eyes, mistake of the lips, negligence of the heart and by the movement of the tongue. ameen
